DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

DHCP - System of assigniing IP addresses to each network device (host)or organisation network.

Central server that manges a pool of IP addresses and leases them out to requesting devices eliminating manual configurations

It improves network security as it reduces IP addresses conflicts by managing address allocation centrally. The configuration information includes the following:

  • IP address
  • Subnet masks
  • Default gateway
  • DNS Address

Lease time - the time a device can use the assigned IP

IP address pool - A range of IP address managed by the DHCP to distribute to devices

DHCP relay agent - Forwards DHCP messages between different networks.
